Thirty years of hoarding
Nemo Gould, born Minneapolis 1975, raised in Nevada City, trained in Kansas City and Berkeley, resident artist at the San Francisco dump. The short film first; then the chapters, each with the pieces it produced.
Born to two ceramic artists
Both parents met at the Kansas City Art Institute. The family moves west; Nemo grows up in Nevada City, California, among kilns, tools and things worth keeping.
First show, above a coffee roaster
A solo show at Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters, then a group show in a church hall in Nevada City. Found objects already.
Kansas City Art Institute, BFA
Through the same doors as his parents. "Mantenna," a rooftop installation, and a garbage-binge art show in Bozeman, Montana.
MFA, and a show inside the recycling center
The graduate exhibition at the Berkeley Art Museum; the same year, an exhibition at the Berkeley Recycling Center. The material had found him.
Artist in residence at the dump
Four months at Recology with unlimited access to the transfer station. "Waste Deep." The hoard becomes a system: if you don't know what's under the pile, it's just garbage.

Discovery Channel. San Jose Museum of Art's "Robots: Evolution of a Cultural Icon." Macy's and Barneys windows. Wired, Make, the Chronicle.
Two years at the Aquarium
"Tentacles" at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Museum of Neon Art, the Museum of Sonoma County. The large-scale creatures: Megalodon, Petroparasite, the U.S.S. Gaslight.
Deus Machina, then its dark twin
A 125-inch figure built from a milling machine gear cover and a drill press stand. Mechastopheles follows in 2021 with red light and a hidden smoke machine.
The conflict pieces
Target Audience, The Escalator, the Hand Gun series — decommissioned weapons rebuilt as arguments. Selected for the de Young Museum's open exhibition.
